Why LEGO Gave Up on Its ‘Eco-Friendly Bricks’
Why LEGO Gave Up on Its ‘Eco-Friendly Bricks’In its journey toward sustainability, LEGO spent years searching for alternatives to traditional plastic. Among its most high-profile efforts were bricks made from sugarcane-based bioplastics and recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles. | ![]() |
But reality didn’t quite match the vision.
The PET-based bricks proved less durable than traditional ABS, and the overall carbon footprint of production showed minimal improvement.
Even more concerning, mass-producing these new materials would have required a complete overhaul of LEGO’s existing factory infrastructure—
a transition demanding immense energy and resources.
Ultimately, LEGO concluded that this well-intentioned innovation could lead to greater waste and environmental strain.
So the project was halted.
Instead, LEGO took a different approach:
Maximizing the value of its existing, high-quality bricks by helping them last longer and serve better.
It wasn’t a retreat—but a moment of clarity about what true sustainability really means.
True sustainability is about respecting longevity.
One durable, long-lasting product can preserve more resources than a dozen short-lived items stamped with “eco-friendly” labels.

At OHSOBORN, we live by that belief.
We’ve created a scrub sponge that’s boilable, reusable, and built to last.
It holds its shape, repels bacteria, and reduces waste.
“Lasting longer is the first step to protecting our planet.”
That’s not just our motto—it’s our definition of real sustainability.
Because in the end, it’s not just what you use—it’s how you use it that defines its value.
Even a simple sponge carries meaning—when used with care and intention.
