Among its most high-profile efforts were bricks made from sugarcane-based bioplastics and recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles.

Even more concerning, mass-producing these new materials would have required a complete overhaul of LEGO’s existing factory infrastructure—
a transition demanding immense energy and resources.

Ultimately, LEGO concluded that this well-intentioned innovation could lead to greater waste and environmental strain.

So the project was halted.

Instead, LEGO took a different approach:
